The 'Tricks' of the Trade

While there are many interesting aspects to my job, one of my favorites is putting together a publicity event. Past experiences include arranging former Packers kicker Ryan Longwell to kick a football right before a circus elephant kicked a football and staging a media event for the “world's strongest" chicken. Yeah, you read that right. Another favorite was arranging for some area blind children to get on the ice with Disney On Ice characters and be given the chance to touch their costumes and props.

Recently I was involved in assisting the Harlem Globetrotters in getting one of their players to attempt a trick shot at Lambeau Field. The past few years the Globetrotters have been staging amazing shots at famous stadiums or tourist attractions around the country. In 2016 we talked about the possibility of doing a trick shot at the legendary Lambeau Field. Time got away from us so we decided to see if we could make it happen in 2017.

Toward the end of this past summer, I asked the Globetrotters if they were still interested in Lambeau and the answer was a resounding yes. Pardon the pun, but I got the ball rolling by contacting the Packers to see if they were still interested in hosting the Globetrotters player. In 2016 they said they would be open to the idea. I called my PR/communications colleague Aaron Popkey at the Packers to see if we could make it happen this year and he said yes.

Once the green light was given, we had to nail down a date for the player to fly to Green Bay and hope that over the course of two days the weather would cooperate. We decided on a couple of days in mid-October so that if rained one day we could attempt the trick shot on the morning of the second day. Then we had to decide where in Lambeau Field we could do this and what the shot would be. We decided the shot would be off the top of stadium concourse roof near the clock.

One other small detail needed to be handled. We needed a portable basketball hoop. If one is not readily available in the market the Globetrotters attempt the trick shot they order and buy one online. Due to some last minute changes and flight issues, we didn't have enough time to buy a hoop and have one shipped here. So I needed to find a hoop. As some people may know, I am a dedicated runner and one of my routes during the week takes me past the Pella Windows store and factory in Ashwaubenon just off Ashland Avenue. I happen to notice throughout the summer that they had a portable basketball hoop out in their parking lot, which I assumed was for their employees to use during breaks or over lunch. I gave them a call and they were more than generous to allow us to not only use the hoop but deliver and pick it up too!

So Globetrotters player Zeus McClurkin had his venue and his hoop and he pulled off a great shot from the roof. The Globetrotters and the Packers released the video of the trick shot in mid-November and it garnered a ton of social media interest to promote the Globetrotters' appearance at the Resch Center on December 26. All in a day's work.
