In the spirit of beer being the beverage of the everyday man (and woman), we present Musical Cheers, a column that puts real beer in the hands of real people. Musical Cheers is guest authored by a revolving selection of friends and columnists with tastes as varied as the beers they review.

Name of beer reviewing: Stillmank Brewing Company's Perky Porter
Type of beer: Porter
ABV: 7.0 percent
Pre-tasting: If I'm not drinking beer I am drinking coffee, so it only seemed natural to drink a beer infused with coffee. Perky Porter comes in 4, 16-ounce cans. The artwork is thoughtfully designed with a coffee cup resting over bright orange flames, accompanied by stalks of grain to the left and right. Typically I am a straight-out-of-the-can beer drinker. I made an exception for this beer and I am glad I did. A solid 2.5 finger head, similar in color to the crema of a freshly pulled shot of espresso. The beer itself is dark, with notes of coffee (as I would have expected for a coffee porter) and roasted malt.
Post-tasting: The sweetness of the malted barley hit my palate first, followed quickly by a dark roasted coffee and milk chocolate. The balance of these tasting notes is spot on. I was expecting the mouthfeel to be thicker. That being said, I find this beer enjoyable and easy to drink, not leaving me full and bloated like other dark beers, but perky and ready for a second!
You'll like this beer if: If you like coffee and dark beer then let me say this is the beer for you.
You'll dislike this beer if: The only reason you will dislike this beer is if you dislike coffee and/or dark beers. However, you may just like coffee if it is masked as beer, so I'd suggest giving it a fair shot.
